Palma de Mallorca is the current capital of Mallorca Island which is part of the Balearic group of islands in Spain. This capital has lots of offerings which draw many tourists every summer. Tourist attractions
There is no lack of tourist attractions at Palma even though it is a capital on an island. Close by is the impressive building of Consulado del Mar which serves as the region’s autonomous government building although it was once an impressive Renaissance gallery during the 17th century. Tourists would be delighted with Paseo del Borne which is a most lively street in town. It functions as a historical center with elegant 19th century palaces along its quaint narrow medieval lanes. There is a distinct Italian influence that is very characteristic here.
Other beauties
Besides the local impressive ancient Cathedral in Palma, there are other great palaces between the cathedral and the local Plaza de Cort. Tourists would enjoy the palaces of Colom, Oleo, Villalonga, Oleza and Truyols with the Archiepiscopal Palais.
The famous Iglesia de San Francisco Church is located here at Palma with the Moorish Arabian Baths structures that showcase the deep influence of past cultures and architectures.
Plaza de Cort is the place to hang out while in town as the local town hall, Ayuntamiento stands. It sports an outstanding façade that goes way back to the 17th century with the Santa Catalina Church nearby. This is one of the ancient Gothic churches still standing to reflect on the past history and cultures.
The ancient quarter of Palma is called El Puig which is situated behind La Lonja with a couple of interesting sights such as the 14th century Santa Cruz church which sports a 13th century crypt. There are also palaces and castles around the old town quarter that showcase impressive ancient architecture. These include Montenegro Palace, Casa Belloto and Casa Weyler.
